It's been a while since we had a Family Fridays post!
I can't even imagine how that happened, but we're back! And I can't wait to tell you what Pirate and I just did!

But first!
If you follow us on Facebook, (and you totally should!), you may have seen me post this. Well, here is the much awaited answer.

If you've been following my blog for any amount of time, you may know how important quality time is to us, and especially to our six year old, Pirate.

Pirate's days are long. They start before "bright and early", since it's still dark at 5am. By the time she gets off of the school bus, we get about three good hours with her a day, four if we're lucky. After the 7 o'clock hour rolls around, all bets are off. Exhaustion takes over. Monsters come out.

All that to say, family time has to be found and seized!

One year old Tootsie Roll was already down for a nap when Pirate got off of the bus. It was too cold to play outside,
I took one of her favorite things and brought it indoors.

I grabbed some wooden skewers, a bag of marshmallows, a lighter, of course my coffee, and some rocks for a pretend outdoorsy feel.

We were ready! It was time to roast some marshmallows!

You guys!
Tons. Of. Fun.

It was some of the most fun we've had in a while! I saw real smiles and laughs out of my child that exhaustion usually keeps hidden.

Pirate discovered that she kinda likes burnt marshmallows -- my personal favorite. She squealed when the marshmallow caught fire and had to blow it out. When we ran out of marshmallows, she got a refill from the cabinet. And yum! I mean, who doesn't love sugar?! We do!
Here are some more pics of our fun!

I'd love to add how cheap this activity was. I'll go out on a limb and say that we spent less than $5 total. And, best of all, it was a good hour of time spent laughing, roasting marshmallows and investing in our mommy-daughter relationship.

Leave us a comment, what do you do to survive being stuck indoors? Do you like roasting marshmallows? Anything activities you'd like to see us try?

We had gorgeous weather!
Sunny. Warm. Awesome.
Spring had sprung. I knew it had, it said so all over my Facebook feed. But it didn't stay epic for long. Rain and cold air came back this week! Since then, I've had a song stuck in my head that I remember from when I was Pirate's age. I may not be able to find it on youtube; but a couple of decades later, I can still hear it oh-so-clearly!

"It's raining outside and we can't go out to play; what do you like to do in the rain?"

So with it being so cold and wet outside, we opted to stay indoors. We kept ourselves warm and dry by drinking coffee, and coloring! That's right, I said coloring! It seems to be all the rage now. Grown-ups relaxing with their old childhood pastime. In fact, it's such a hit that that coloring book creators have gone wild creating new, grown-up friendly pages in countless themes! But enough of that! The best part of it all was that Pirate and I could do this together. Spending time with this kid is oh-so-important to her little heart and it's oh-so-important to us as a family.

Coloring with Pirate

And if we can spend time together without me having to cross a perilous obstacle course she has designed or hiding under the kitchen sink, I'm all for it!

Because, really. What 32 year old really needs to be under the kitchen sink?!

People get stuck.

Anyway! We couldn't have picked a better time to be stuck indoors. I was given the opportunity to review an adult coloring book! So we grabbed some pencils, some coffee and the coloring book! Well, technically we printed out some .pdf copies - which, if you're into it, when you buy this coloring book on Amazon, it includes a free .pdf download.

I was really surprised at how much detail there was to this book. It really took some time and effort to color every piece. And if you enjoy coloring, that's a great thing.

It was nice to just sit and chill.
Drink my coffee and color a picture with my girl.

Pirate lost interest pretty quickly and flipped her paper over to draw on the blank side, but she is 6 years old. Still, I think it was a win for us! Inexpensive. No back spasms from being stuck under a table. If you're into coloring, be sure to check this out on Amazon. The author has soooooo many more books to choose from!

Drop us a comment, how do you spend your rainy days? What's your favorite indoor activity with the little ones in your life?

What a crazy title.
I mean – what on Earth?! Am I right?

We just spent a few days snowed in, but with the temperature now in the fifties and the rain we had yesterday, the snow is gone! Today the children went back to school for the first time since Thursday. Snowed in over the long weekend, we had an amazing amount of quality time as a family. Time we don’t usually get. So as much animosity as I bare toward the icy evils of snow itself, this winter weather has felt like more of a blessing than anything.

As I have said before, Pirate loves few things more than a good craft and quality time. To her, quality time fills her little heart up and she feels loved. So while she was in school I made a mental list of a couple of her favorite things that we could do together while Tootsie Roll napped.

We started with crafts! Her face simply lights up when art is involved. She gets that from her daddy. I thought it would be fun, since our snow had melted, to make pictures with melted snowmen. She told me that her snowman traveled to Florida. He melted under a palm tree with coconuts. A happy way to go.

When I tell you that art is not my forte, I mean that with every fiber in my body … and then some. I am not an artist. I got an F- in art in 7th grade. I can provide references upon request.  I’m a writer.

However, it’s not about perfection. Motherhood is never about being perfect, don’t ever think it is. This was about Pirate and spending time with her on her level, meeting her where she is and letting her enjoy being a kid.  A kid who likes things that I don’t. And that’s perfectly okay. So when she asked me why I wasn’t also making a snowman, I had to take a step back and pick up a crayon.

Pirate's snowman melting under a palm tree. It was a sunny day.
My snowman melted on a beach.
Our next adventure sent us to the kitchen. Hot Dog Pie was on the dinner menu. Over the summer, we created what soon became one of Pirate’s favorite meals. It is basically Jiffy cornbread mix with cut hot dogs mixed in. It sounds crazy, but it’s actually pretty good. Even Mr. Incredible has enjoyed it once or twice. Pirate adores it, and if you asked her to describe it she couldn’t… because she’d be too busy devouring it!

It’s a recipe so simple that Pirate made a cooking tutorial. If you are interested in seeing her teach you how to make it be sure to comment below and tell us!

We took it out of the oven and it smelled delicious. It looked delicious!

I started to transfer it onto a pretty plate to take a picture and it broke into pieces. It was a sad mess.

But again, none of this is about being perfect. Life is a mess. Motherhood is a mess. It’s supposed to be. When we’re obsessed with being perfect, we’re going to fail every time. And that's exhausting.

Did the crumbly meal did bother Pirate? Ha! No. To her it was a delicious mess. In fact, our six year old girl ate 3/4 of this Hot Dog Pie with a two glasses of milk!

We finished our night playing with Tootsie Roll, she woke up in time to have some dinner (minus the hot dogs), an obstacle course in the living room, homework, stories and bed. Pirate told me that she was glad that was a good day with her favorite things! And that makes my heart full.

I hope you enjoyed our crazy adventure today. What do you do to spend time with the little people in your life? What crazy food does your family adore?

Comment below, I’d love to hear from you. Remember to tell us if you want to see Pirate’s cooking tutorial!

Pirate playing in the first sprinkling of snow.

At about 5:45 this morning, we got the call telling us school would be canceled due to inclement weather. Hooray! Hooray! Snow day!

Morning came and morning went. Snow hadn't arrived yet. I decided that I needed to run to the store while I could. While there was still bread left on the aisle. Before milk was impossible to find. I needed to go before the apocalypse. Zombies. Snow. Whatever. I needed to go get the essentials.

Fruit, milk, sugar and coffee creamer. I had what our house needed to survive the winter weather. Truth be told, I expected very little. My main reason for going to the store was to beat the rush. I made it outside to see the beginning of snow.

Two things crossed my mind. First, "I want to take a picture, but the camera won't pick it up." And secondly, I remembered Loralei Gilmore and her love for winter's fluffy present. "I smell snow," she would say every year when it snowed. I wanted to post that as my status. I however don't share Loralei's love for the snow. Not at all. Mr. Incredible had to listen to me rant about it a few minutes ago!

I do however, love the fun it offers to my children.

We live in the south, and in our area snow happens a couple times per year and maybe an inch or few at a time. It's just enough to cancel school and plaster smiles on some little faces. So, that's enough for me to be excited about this snow day.

I got home to find that Pirate had already started collecting snow in a cup. "I need something to make it a slushy," she said. So I offered her some coffee. It came with a mixed review. "It's disgusting, but good. Mostly disgusting."
Pirate and her coffee snow slushy.

Tootsie Roll got her first taste of snow. Literally. She wasn't sure what exactly to make of it but she had no objections!

We played in the snow until I could no longer feel my toes. Until Pirate remembered that she is a warm blooded creature and not a snowman. Until Tootsie Roll had eaten her fill of snow.

Now remember, snow is not my thing. But loving my family is. Pirate feels loved when she has our full attention. Quality time is so important to her. It's her love language and she will outright ask for time together.

Right before Christmas, I came across a blog on Pinterest that had words I needed to read. While its focus was on marriage, the application goes so much further. It was about how to love somebody when you aren't necessarily feeling the love. As a parent, as a human being in any relationship, there are times when it's not easy to feel the love; just like there are times when you are so smothered by love it's crazy. It's life!

A quote from a book suddenly became an intentional goal for me. A resolution that I don't annually make this time of year.
“When an action doesn’t come naturally to you, it is a greater expression of love. Ultimately, comfort is not the issue. We are talking about love, and love is something you do for someone else, not something you do for yourself. Love is a choice.” — Gary Chapman (The 5 Love Languages)
Snowballs. Snow angels. Snow coffee slushies. Frozen toes. Chattering teeth. Time with my children and filling their little love tanks. That was just the beginning to our snow day!

I thought I'd take a picture of my wall today. Right now, I have this verse {1 Corinthians 15:58} written in big, bright "look-at-me!!" colors and hanging in our kitchen.

Every so often, the only nice word I can think of to describe my days is "flustering". Yes, that's the word I chose; it seems most accurate. I find myself just falling short, and losing a Godly perspective on things often.

Thank you, Baby Blues!
I'm a wife and a mom. Messes and chaos are a part of life. I'll clean, only to find Little Bit dumping something out onto the floor like she's a two year old. (She is a two year old!) The dishes pile up and wait for me in the sink. And I can't find my toothbrush. That's life. Sometimes though it can feel so unending, and my efforts fruitless and futile.

I usually {always.} find that I adopt the worst attitude and get quickly overwhelmed and flustered when I have put my priorities in a blender and hit puree.

How quickly I forget that what I'm doing here in my home, as a wife and mom, has more value than the immediate. My family and our home were gifted to me by God - and what a blessing they are! My taking care of my family is my act of obedience to the Lord; I'm ultimately working for Him. And, thank God, He says it's not in vain!! If I'm only mopping my floor for the sake of it being shiny, I'll gladly throw the mop away now because I know someone will walk on it before it's dried!

It comes as no shock to me that when I'm not in the bible, and dependent on God to smother me in His grace and mercies daily, that my world turns into complete bedlam. {In the end, it's okay.} It's usually not nearly the chaotic household apocalypse that I think it is once I get a grip, have some coffee, read my bible, and regroup. I wipe up the floor, often with a little girl's help. I find my toothbrush, usually in Elmo's mouth, and I play never-ending hide-and-seek with a crazy munchkin. Smothered in grace and mercy... it's not a bad thing!

Parenting:  someone should really write a book about it!
I'm going to sound cliche for a moment, forgive me. I've learned more things in the last 22 months than I have in my entire life. I'm not talking about quantity of new facts - though I could probably make a decent argument for that as well - but I mean real, hearty, and significant details that are necessary for daily life. It's amazing the extra compartment that God has given my mind to store all the random Pirate-related items.

1. Don't leave the coffee cup unattended or within Pirate's reach. Also, Pirate's reach is ALWAYS much higher than you think it is.

2. Messes are easier to clean up than hurt feelings. Even when it's flour.

3. Other people will have opinions and they will outnumber you. At times, it will be overwhelming and frustrating. I've learned the hard way that I should handle their well-intentioned concerns and opinions with more grace and tact then oozing wrath and adrenaline.

 4. Sometimes you have to just cry it out. Things will get better.

5. Equal rights for all persons. Even bears.

 6. "Welcome to parenthood, children will scare the crap out of you" - my mom. I think that's a mostly accurate quote, I did just have a c-section. I don't know if you can tell, but Pirate is a fearless froggie at the top of the stairs.

7. IF YOU WAKE HER, YOU WILL NOT PASS GO OR COLLECT $200. Yes, that's her big-girl car seat strapped into a high chair.

8. The park is not called a park. It's called "WEEEEEEEEE!!!"

9. I'm not Pirate's favorite parent if Daddy's home, and I can't take that personally. It's really a beautiful thing.

10. Let her help! It makes her feel special and big. She loves it.

11. Give her big smooches, it helps prepare her for the embarrassing teenage years when I give her hugs and kisses in front of her friends!

12. Sinful nature is not a myth. I have little teeth marks in my arm to prove it.

13. Don't fall asleep on the couch when she has crayons and a blank wall.

14. I have to stick up for Pirate - sometimes I'll come off as crazy and overprotective. Even people who love her immensely won't necessarily see things the same way that I do, and that's OK. But I have to be ready, should the situation arise, to give my daughter what she needs - whether that's a nap, some quiet time away from the chaos, or something completely different.

15. She grows WAY TOO QUICKLY! She'll be two in October. That's craziness.

Last week sometime I came across something very exciting - to me, anyway!
On one of the blogs I follow, Confessions of a Homeschooler, a post caught my attention about a bible study - online, printable, and free! All words I like.  (Go here to see it!). And what was the icing on the cake? It's on Proverbs 31.

I was telling my Mr. Incredible last night, (as we were driving the baby around town at 1am trying to get her to sleep), that I love Mrs. Proverbs 31.
What am I talking about? Proverbs 31 is about a "wife of noble character", and what makes her noble and good, how she blesses her family and husband, and why she the bible says she is to be praised.
Let me give a quote from the first day of reading in the bible study:
"Once upon a time there was a prince who would one day be a King. While he was young his mother wisely trained her son on how to find a virtuous wife. She went through the alphabet one letter at a time giving him attributes that he was to seek out in his future wife. Using the alphabet in this manner made it easier for her son to remember and even perhaps memorize what he was looking for in his dream wife. And thus, we have the writings of Proverbs 31 – except this is not a fairy tale!"   taken from the e-book: Proverbs 31: One Virtue at a Time, pg. 5
I know some women who find her overwhelming, and even feel inadequate reading about her. But to me, it's different.  I find such encouragement in this chapter. It gives me hope and it gives me instruction of what in the world I'm supposed to be striving for. And since it's scriptural, I believe that it is possible and it is what is required of us. And I re-learn everyday that being this kind of wife is not something to be done in my strength, but in Christ's.

As a young wife and mother, I am bombarded with different ideas about what is important. I am surrounded with different methods for parenting and ways to make my marriage more significant. Not to mention, all the different theories of what will make my life as a woman in 2012 more significant and meaningful. And none of these items, in and of themselves, are a bad thing. But I find that it is far too easy to lose sight of what God's word has to say about the subject.

I pray that rather than 'conforming to the pattern [of the wives and mothers] of this world', that I would learn what the bible says a wife is to be. I want to be THAT for my husband, and THAT for my daughter.

So, I ramble when I get going..

I really look forward to this bible study. If you feel so lead, please check it out! You don't have to be a part of the online group to do this, (we just finished week 1) but it's really cool.

To find this bible study, let me just point you in the right direction.
